Regional Training Center Director
A 2009 NCAA champion from Cornell, Leen is an assistant coach for the University of Virginia. He was an assistant coach at Duke for the 2010-11 season and worked closely with the middle weights. He recorded a strong career at Cornell, making four straight appearances in the NCAA tournament while wrestling at 149 and 157 pounds. The 2008 national champion at 157 pounds, Leen posted a career record of 118-29 and was a First-Team All-Ivy League selection three times.
Steve Garland – Coach
Steve Garland is the current Head Wrestling Coach at The University of Virginia. Coach Garland had been the head coach for the past ten seasons. His teams won the ACC tournament championship in 2010 and 2015. In 2010 he was named the ACC Coach of the Year. Garland started his coaching career in 2000 at Cornell University, where he was named the 2006 Nwca national assistant coach of the year. As a student athlete at The University of Virginia he was a 2000 NCAA All American (2nd), was named the 2000 ACC Wrestler of the Year and won an ACC individual championship in 1997.
Mark Ellis – Coach
Mark Ellis is in his first season as an assistant coach with the Virginia wrestling program. Ellis comes to the Cavaliers after most recently serving as an assistant coach at Grand Canyon University for the 2014-15 season. Prior to his stint at Grand Canyon, Ellis served as an assistant coach at Chattanooga where he helped guide the Mocs into the top 20 of the national rankings during the 2013-14 season. Chattanooga won the Southern Conference Championship that season and sent five wrestlers to the NCAA Championships. A two-time All-American at Missouri, Ellis claimed the 2009 NCAA Championship after entering the championships as the second-seeded wrestler at heavyweight.
